A bit of Hermès history

Hermès of Paris was established by Thierry Hermès in 1837 as a harness shop serving European noblemen. In 1880 Thierry's son Charles-Émile Hermès took over management and also introduced saddlery. The family continued to cater to the equestrian needs of the elite and in 1900 came out with the Haut à Courroies bag for riders to carry their saddles. The company acquired some exclusive rights to the zipper and in 1918 the first leather golf jacket with a zipper came out.

It wasn't until 1922 that the first handbags were introduced after Émile-Maurice Hermès' wife complained of not finding a bag to her liking. In 1935 the sac à dépêches was introduced, but was later renamed the Kelly Bag after becoming famous for a photo of Princess Grace Kelly holding it to shield her pregnancy from the press. In addition to leather goods, Hermès has expanded over the years to include clothing, scarves, footware, gloves, tableware, fragrances, watches and jewelry. The widely recognized horse and carriage logo has been used by the company since the 1950's.

Most Hermès products are produced entirely in France by hand. Usually one craftsman will manufacture an item from start to finish ensuring a top quality piece in keeping with the Hermès tradition of fine elegance. Hermès is now led and controlled by the sixth generation of family members, but interestingly LVMH, a conglomerate that owns many luxury companies such as Louis Vuitton, holds more than 20% of the company shares.

What are Hermès items worth?

We understand that before you bring in or mail in your items you will have concerns on the value.

In addition to how rare or common a piece is, several other factors will affect the value.

  • Condition of the piece. While a used piece is no longer considered mint, many will still hold value. Check your items carefully for condition. First check visually for condition, marks, completeness and wear. Then check for functionality of zippers and clasps. Not all damage is readily seen at first glance.

  • Condition of the box and packaging. The highest value of course will come with mint and clean items that have perfect original box as well as all of the original packaging, dust covers, tags and inserts.

  • Size of the piece. Generally the larger ones are more valuable than the smaller ones.

  • Detail. Generally the more detail and features the more valuable the item will have.

    What we pay

Generally, our goal is to pay half the estimated resale value for items that resell for $25 or more. We buy all kinds of handbags both with and without original boxes. The condition of both the packaging and the item will of course affect its value.

    How our buying process works

We are not a consignment business. We buy your items outright.

If your want to bring them in, we recommend that you Make an Appointment , so that we can have a buyer available to help you. There is no need to list your items, but if you have more than one brand or product line it helps to sort them that way. Our buyer will go through your items, give you pricing and in most cases get a check cut for you during your appointment. More expensive bags and brands that are heavily counterfeited may take more time. We may take a series of photos of the item to use to verify authenticity.

If like most people, you wish to mail them in, please take a look at our authenticity page. If you did not purchase them directly from a high end retailer, it is a good idea to give your bags a quick check for some obvious known characteristics of common counterfeits. After that, please fill out our form to get things started and let us know your items are coming. If you have enough to qualify for free shipping, we will get prepaid UPS labels to you. While items usually arrive with no problems, we occasionally have items arrive damaged. We are NOT RESPONSIBLE for lost or damaged packages. If you prefer, you are welcome to insure and ship them with the carrier of your choice at your expense, but please fill out the form anyway and include the words "self shipped" in your item description. That way we will be sure to have accurate information for sending your check.

Once your items arrive, we will process them and mail a check to you within five business days. Please remember that once we drop the check in the mail, the amount of time to deliver the check is in the hands of the postal service. If you want to know exactly when your items arrive, please note your tracking numbers on the prepaid UPS labels and go to www.ups.com to track them.
